Delaney Dunlap is walking with Love Ya Mean It on October 28, 2007 in Richboro, PA.
Hi I'm Delaney and I'm ten. On October 28 I will be leading team Love Ya Mean It (LYMI for short) in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk for the Cure at Tyler State Park in Bucks County. Won't you join us in working for a cure?
This year our team is walking for three people with type 1 diabetes. There's my brother and I and now our sister's classmate Gina. Gina's home is in Korea but she goes to high school here. She was diagnosed type 1 just before the end of school last year. We are happy diabetes didn't keep her from coming back this year. All three of us would love to have your help in finding a cure for Juvenile Diabetes. So would the millions of others with type 1 diabetes. Please join our walk or give your support to those walking with us.
Juvenile Diabetes, also know as type 1 diabetes comes from the body's protective system mistakenly killing off the insulin producing cells in our pancreases. So we have to take insulin every day and then test our blood a number of times to make sure we took the right amount. That means needles and lancets, lots of them! Scientists are working to slow down Juvenile Diabetes and maybe reversing it. There are also new treatments like my insulin pump. I now use it instead of shots. With it, I trade four shots a day for one needle putting in a pump infusion set every other day. That's a good trade.
Our family went to a week long Children with Diabetes convention last summer. There were special meetings for 'tweens, teens and parents and a big convention hall with all the companies that make diabetes stuff. We learned about taking better care of our diabetes and met other kids and families dealing with it. A bunch of companies were giving away backpack, t shirts, hats and things. Connor won an iPod shuffle. He already has an iPod so he is going to raffle it of to someone on our team at the walk. There can be a cure for Gina, Connor and I and way better treatments too. JDRF helps do the research to find these better treatments and hopefully a cure. We are only three kids. Roughly one kid in 500 gets type 1 diabetes, so there are a lot of us with type 1. We all try to be just normal kids. Life would be easier with a cure that did away with poking holes in our fingers.
We would love you and your family to join us at the walk. It is easy and fun. Click the links on this page to sign up to walk with our team and /or support the team.
Love Ya / Mean It.
