Hello, This year, I'll be taking part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes along with a half-million other walkers across the country. Our goal: To raise $105 million to help fund research for a cure for type-1 diabetes and its complications.
Type-1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating, disease that affects millions of people. Through the years funds raised by the JDRF have been used to help fund research that will lead to a cure. Not to mention that their studies help fund research that makes living with diabetes easier. Some of the research that they have funded has helped me have a "normal" life as one with diabetes. I have had type-1 diabetes for over 14 years now, that means in the past 14 years I have given myself over 15,000 injections of insulin and tested my blood sugar at least 30,000 times. These are probably low-ball estimates but those numbers can be quite astounding and really do add up. Yet, I am doing my best and trying to live my life in control of this illness. This is why finding a cure is so important! Through many years of research and study improvements to treating diabetes have come about. More can be done though, a cure CAN be found, but what it comes down to is funding a cure, which is what the JDRF is doing.
Many people think type-1 diabetes can be controlled by insulin. While insulin does keep people with type-1 diabetes alive, it is NOT a cure. Aside from the daily challenges of living with type-1 diabetes, there are many severe, often fatal, complications caused by the disease.
There is good news, though; a cure for type-1 diabetes is within reach. In fact, JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type-1 diabetes research to date.
I'm hoping for your support because now more than ever, EACH of us can be a part of bringing about a cure. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as you're able?
I realize at times it can be difficult to either choose a charity to help or to give as much as you wish you could. However, any donation - big or small - can help. That is all I can hope for, that you can find the time to make a donation to this worthy cause to help them find a cure that could one day benefit so many children and adults including myself.
Together, we can make the cure a reality.
Thank you and God Bless, Brian
