Melanie Thompson is walking with Princess Avery on September 8, 2007 in Amarillo, TX.
Hi! This year will be our first year to get to take part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach our goal of raising $90 million.
As you may know, our daughter, Avery, was diagnosed with Type 1 juvenile diabetes less than a year ago when she was only 3. Avery was just a typical toddler--precious, active, picky eater, whiney at times, princess most of the time--nothing really unusual. Until she got thirsty... and more whiney... and started to wet the bed at night... and during naps... and lost a few pounds. As a doctor, I knew what was going on, but as a MOM, I couldn't admit it. But the doctor in me won, and we borrowed a blood glucose meter one evening and checked Avery. When the meter displayed, "DANGER HIGH," I knew our lives would never be the same.
Since Avery's diagnosis, she has done incredibly well. She cheerfully lets us "check her fingers" atleast 8 times daily and bravely gets up to 5 insulin shots in her legs each day. Now Avery is on an insulin pump which delivers insulin in a much more natural rate than shots. With a pump, Avery doesn't have to follow such a strict diet and miss out on birthday cake and special treats. Yeah!! Avery LOVES her pump--decorated or not--she wears it around the clock and proudly shows it off!
Jerry Don and I believe God is using this illness to bring glory. We can't see how and may never understand, but we have faith that He is in the middle of this and will take care of Avery. We do ask for your prayers for a cure.
Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people... a large and growing percentage of them children.
There is some good news, though. For the first time, scientists are predicting that we CAN expect to see a cure well within our lifetime!
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
Join us in praying expectantly for a cure.
Thank you. Melanie and Jerry Don Thompson
