Nancy Stopper is walking with Emma's Strollers on June 7, 2009 in Leesburg, VA.
Hi! This is the 3rd year that our family will be taking part in JDRF's Walk to Cure Diabetes, along with one-half million other walkers across the country, as we try to reach a goal of raising $105million
Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating disease that affects millions of people and a growing percentage of them children.
We are walking in honor of Emma, our 4 year old daughter who was diagnosed over 2 years ago with Type 1 diabetes at the young age of 25 months old! We hope that by the time she is an adult, this disease has been cured. But for now, we take it step by step, and day by day, as we manage our lifestyle of living with diabetes.
Diabetes has not slowed us down as Emma has enjoyed playing in the dirt, going to sporting events, extra curricular activities, trips and vacations, and Emma even started preschool this year with a fantastic teacher who is incredibly supportive of Emma's needs at school.
But make no mistake, it has changed our life. Since diagnosis, Emma has had her finger poked approximately 8100 times. She now wears an insulin pump, a fantastic invention that has significantly reduced her injections, and which has kept her diabetes at a very manageable level and given her great freedom. We have recently starting using a Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS) that gives us ongoing readings and enables us to more proactively react to her highs and lows. This is another great tool in the arsenal of diabetes management - but still not a cure.
Technology such as insulin pumps and CGMS systems would not be available were it not for organizations like the JDRF.
Now, more than ever, you can make a crucial difference. Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as possible? Together, we can make the cure a reality!
We appreciate any donations that you can make to this worthwhile organization that is helping to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes so that our daughter Emma, and the many others who live daily with this disease, can live a long and disease-free life. We understand the difficult financial times many are suffering through, and donations of any size, or merely well-wishes, are greatly appreciated. If you know of friends or family that would love to donate to this worthy cause, dont hesitate to share this page with them.
Thanks so much!
